We have all heard our parents and teachers use the words "brain food" at least once in our lives, but are there really foods that help our child's mind and body develop quicker? After a little research we learned that there are many different types of food that can truly help the development of children.
Below is a list of different foods we commonly eat but are actually doing us and our children a lot of good! Maybe it will even encourage you to try something new!
Eggs: Eggs contain choline that helps with brain and memory development. So scramble a few up tomorrow and give your child a little boost before he heads to school!
Salmon, Tuna, and Avocado: All of these foods have Omega-3 fatty acids which improves cognitive functions, such as the ability to control impulses, remember things, and show mental flexibility. Younger children might not be adventurous enough to try salmon or avocado but try to introduce these foods into their diet as soon as possible.
*Watch how much tuna your child consumes because it is high in mercury. One to two times a week is fine and using light chunked tuna in water is a better choice than albacore.
Low-fat milk, Soy milk, Yogurt, Cheese, Almonds, Tofu, and Edamame: Many of us know the all important calcium that we find in dairy products that help strengthen our child's bones but did you know that they can receive the same benefits from eating almonds, tofu and edamame?
Peanut Butter: Peanuts and peanut butters are packed with vitamin E. Vitamin E is good for the brain because it protects nervous membranes.
Beef: If you cook your children lean beef, you will be providing them with an excellent source of iron. Iron is a very important mineral that will help your stay energized and thus concentrate better in school.
So the question has been answered! The list of foods that are beneficial for child development and growth is endless. The most important thing is to feed your child healthy whole foods and try and stay away from packaged processed foods as much as possible.
